Educating and Empowering Patients
In 2016, Nancy Peña, ONP-CG, CMI, Oncology Patient Navigator y Certified Medical Interpreter, who works at Dana-Farber and Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, and who has developed several navigation protocols for different organizations, trained a group of volunteers in Guatemala with the support of the Association Rebuilding Lives. After that first training, 5 navigators started a pilot program in Guatemala to support cancer patients so that they have access to cancer treatments, accompaniment to their appointments, emotional support, and education on how to navigate the health system. Today, International Patient Navigation seeks to expand training to more Spanish-speaking browsers to support more patients in need of accessing health and treatments. In addition, NPI also provides educational materials on prevention of breast and cervical cancer to both patients and health providers, in order to raise awareness in the community.
